Milesight Releases White Paper on Europe’s Smart Building Transition, Highlighting €32.8 Billion Market Shift Driven by Policy and Technology

XIAMEN, China, Dec. 11, 2025 — Milesight, a leading provider of innovative IoT products, has released its white paper, “Policy-Driven Development of Smart Buildings in Europe.” The paper examines how EU policies such as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), combined with aging building stock, are creating an urgent need — and a sizable market — for smart retrofits.

The analysis finds that roughly 85% of European buildings were constructed before 2000 and that current renovation rates are only about 1% per year. Those factors drive a projected €32.8 billion retrofit opportunity for technologies and solutions that enable compliance, improved energy performance and healthier indoor environments.

To address this opportunity, Milesight presents its FES Plus framework, which integrates Facility (F), Energy (E) and Space (S) Management with People Sensing intelligence (the “Plus”). The framework leverages LoRaWAN’s retrofit-friendly properties — simple deployment, deep coverage and ultra-low power — to turn regulatory compliance into strategic value. Key outcomes include:

  • Facility Management: Enables BACS-compliant monitoring and management.
  • Energy Management: Supports 2030 decarbonization goals by enabling data-driven energy optimization.
  • Space Management: Ensures healthy indoor air quality (IAQ) and efficient space utilization.
  • People Sensing: Transforms static buildings into adaptive, human-centric environments by sensing occupancy, activity and comfort.

“‘People’ is the ‘plus’ that elevates our smart building vision beyond mere efficiency,” said Andy Lee, Sales Director at Milesight. “Occupancy, activity, and comfort are what shape building performance. By sensing occupancy and behavior, we create compliant, efficient spaces that are fundamentally human-centric.”

The white paper stresses that the move to smart buildings is now a strategic imperative driven by policy, market demand and technological progress. Milesight says the FES Plus framework provides a scalable, interoperable path for owners and operators to meet — and exceed — evolving standards while creating lasting competitive advantage.
